5:24 PM. Great Blue Herons are a common sight at Nisqually. I had already passed several of them, and I could see two others when I came across this one. I have several hundred photos of Great Blue Herons, but I paused here because it was near and the light was good.

The Herons are accustomed to people, and this one ignored me and went about his business. As I took in the view I could see he was getting ready to fly. Now usually when a Heron takes flight, he flies away from me, and I have lots of photos of Heron rear ends. This bird had a much better sense of what would make a good photograph and flew in front of me, from my right to my left.
