On September 27, 2015, my cousin Patrica Kelly and her husband Dennis, my cousin Randy Riegsecker and his wife Jan, Rand and Gail Nilsson and Ron and Cindy Taggart-Deffinbaugh hiked the South Kaibab trail to Phantom Ranch a distance of about 7.4 miles and an elevation loss of about 4714 feet. There is no water on the trail and almost no shade. It was broiling hot -- at the bottom a thermometer on Pat's pack registered 115 degrees. We stayed the next day at Phantom Ranch, where again the high was over 100. The next day we hiked up the Bright Angel Trail, a distance of about 9.9 miles and an elevation gain of 4314 feet, although much of it is in the last 3 miles of the hike. It gets cooler as you get higher, so we hiked mostly in 70 - 80 degree weather, most of it in the shade. Thanks to Pat and Dennis for organizing this wonderful experience, and everyone in the group for being such great company.
